Whats a good estimate for the distance between a cars front/rear bumpers and the driver's seat?

The reason I want to know this is because I always have trouble when parallel parking or parking in between cars in a parking lot. Im always afraid I might now realize how close or far I am until I actually GET OUT of the car.
