How do I Tell if a Wound is infected? Please Help!?

I just got a cut on my shin this morning when i was mowing the lawn, my leg fell into a pipe in the ground. If you can picture this in your head, my leg scraped the edge of the pipe causing the skin to scrape upwards causing a deep cut. The wound had skin hanging off of it. and because i wasnt at my house, i ran to a first aid kit and cut some of the skin off and stoped the bleeding b4 putting on a large band aid and heading back to work. the rest of the day, the cut was bleeding but it wasnt hurting very bad. I didnt go to the doctor becuase it was closed. so my parents flushed the wound with warm water and put neosporin and a sterile band aid on it. and in just 2 days, i am going on a school trip where i will be camping for 5 days, and swimming and hiking.What i am wondering is, How can i treat my wound? How can i tell if it is infected? Is my treatment helping the wound at all? and if i will be swimming in a local lake on my camping trip, Will i be able to swim and hav fun? Please help me i am kinda freaking out about all of this. And just so you know i am 13 years old Thank you SO much! :)
