Why does the new Doctor (Matt Smith) seem so crappy?

I don't really think Matt Smith is the problem. Of course he is no David Tennant but I think the problem with the show right now has more to do with them getting away from the past seasons. There are no references, no mention of past companions, Things are different and don't connect to the older seasons we loved. Also it is way too focused on Amy. It is as if see has been his only companion. Like she is all that matters.
