Is "Life of Pi" an example of an "empty calories" novel?

In other words, is it a cleverly constructed masterwork that seems to be profound and illuminating when you are reading it, but later you realize it was all just an elaborate circus act carried out by the author to sell books and get attention, and that in reality it all meant nothing and nothing it in has any application whatsoever in the real world?
